What Is Keratoconus?

The cornea of the eye is the clear layer on the outside of the eye that protects it. It is a barrier that protects against damaging things like germs and dirt. It is dome shaped and sits on the front surface. When a patient has this condition, that cornea gets thinner and starts to bulge gradually outwards until it becomes a cone shape. When this happens, it can cause the vision to get blurry and the eyes to be more sensitive to glare and light. This condition is generally found in both eyes, but it can be worse in one eye than the other. It usually starts to develop in patients when go through puberty. It then progresses over time and can keep getting slowly worse for 10 years or even more.

When the condition is in its earliest stages, there are ways to correct the vision with eyeglasses or soft contacts. As the condition gets worse, it may require rigid, gas-permeable contacts, scleral lenses, or another type of specialty lenses for you to see better. If the condition gets to the advances stage, the patient may need to get a cornea transplant in order to treat the condition. There is also a new treatment available that may stop the progression of the condition or slow it down called corneal collagen cross-linking. This can be used along with the vision correction method.
